Amadou & Mariam – Djagnèba

Amadou Bagayoko and Mariam Doumbia are blind musicians from Mali who met in the late 60’s at the Mali Institute for the Young & Blind. During the military dictatorship years, they faced opposition from family (in regards to their marriage) and adversity in terms of their musical career that started in The Ambassedeurs du Motel de Bamako, a band playing at dinner-places for a rich and/or foreign clientele. During these years, they have soaked up the foreign musical influences (pop, French, Cuban, Latin) which amounted to greater depth and significance in rewritting the history of the region at the dawn of its Independence.
